6 May 2015/ 1830 Hrs/ IIC Conf Room I/ Book Discussion Programme  / Applied Diplomacy: Through the Prism of Mythology: Writings of T P Sreenivasan / Edited by Divya S Iyer

Applied Diplomacy through the Prism of Mythology is a collection of the fine writings of former Ambassador T.P. Sreenivasan, curated from a bunch of riveting essays, commentaries and speeches delivered over the course of the last decade. The seven sections of the collection named after seven immortal sages contain seven essays each, establishing a link between diplomacy and mythology.

The essays in each section bear the imprint of a legendary sage, whose qualities and exploits get reflected in the context and content of the writings. The sages come alive through them in a way perceptible to not only those who are steeped in diplomatic practice and mythology, but also to other interested readers.

The essays throw light on a multiplicity of diplomatic issues that surfaced in the last decade in a manner, which only a seasoned diplomat, a deep thinker and a gifted writer could do. They are valuable to the future generations of readers, just as they were much appreciated when they first found expression.

 Discussants are:

Shri Suresh Prabhu, Hon’ble Railway Minister will chair the programme and the panel consisting of Dr. Bibek Debroy, Research Professor in CPR and Member in NITI Aayog; Amb B S Prakash, Former Ambassador of India in Brazil; Amb Kanwal Sibal, Former Foreign Secretary of India; Amb T P Sreenivasan, author of the book;   Dr. Divya Iyer, editor of the book will discuss the book.

16 & 17 Mar 2015/ Workshop on “Enhancing India’s participation in Global Value Chains” / Maple Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi

Global Value Chains (GVCs) offer a way of reaping the gains of international specialization by the breakup of the production process into geographically separate stages. For countries, this offers opportunities to specialize in different stages of the production process and thereby move up the value chain. India is seen as lagging in adoption of this mode at least in part due to deficiencies in policy. However, there is a weak evidence base for this perception and hence no coherent basis for policy to encourage Indian and foreign firms to cooperate in value chains.

The objective of this study is to fill the evidence base on this issue. Through a survey of circa 100 firms in selected industries, detailed empirical evidence is to be provided of their engagement in GVC activity; the domestic barriers to those engagements; and the costs associated with those barriers. Policies benefitting India will also be identified.
